A Philadelphia Event to support the Troy Davis Human Rights Documentary and Project

Troy Davis

Troy Davis

You may remember the radio show that I did in September on the Troy Davis situation. He is the man on death row for a murder that he did not commit. I received a lot of feedback that this was the most important interview that I have ever done.

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/drsallywitt/2008/09/15/Terry

Terry Benedict, the filmaker, and I have been trying to get together for a video interview about the fundraiser, but we can’t wait anymore to share this information with my contacts.

There is a fund raising event in Philadelphia on December 12, 2008 for this important Human Rights project.

Here is an email about it from the organizer, my friend Kris Sumney. You can contact her at kris@eventfx.biz.

Registration is now LIVE for the December 12th event.

It is URGENT that we reach as many as people as possible both locally and around the world to either attend this event or make a donation to sponsor someone else to attend. In order for this event to be a success, we need to sell a minimum of 150 tickets. It is important to note that oral arguments are being heard on December 9th, human rights day is on December 10th, and our event December 12th. This film needs funding right away in order to make an impact.

PLEASE consider university law students, human rights advocates, anti death penalty groups, legal groups, defense attorneys, Bar Associations, peace movements, churches, Troy Davis supporters, classical music lovers, friends, and family.

If you send me a list of emails, I can create a customized invitation for your group or you can forward directly.

The website for registration is www.filmforlife.eventbrite.com

PLEASE register yourself today and forward to as many people as possible.

This event will include MUSICAL, EDUCATIONAL, and INSPIRATIONAL components and will also feature a delicious Georgia inspired menu. The Fuel Collection is an absolutely beautiful historic building and the evening will be packed with outstanding networking opportunities with each other as well as the filmmaker, photographer, Troy Davis’s sister, an exonerated death row survivor, and more.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you very much!!!

Special Dr. Sally Show Monday, Innocent Man with a Death Sentence??

I recently met a woman named Kristina Sumney at a woman’s networking event. I was very impressed with her. She told an amazing story of a man on death row, who is innocent. She is involved in trying to help the filmmaker who wants to document the story, Terry Benedict.

I set up an “emergency” show for 5pm Eastern on Monday. Please listen live or download and listen later.

Kristina Sumey’a message to me:

I am passionately involved in the Shae Foundation who’s mission is to inspire artists (film, music, art, theater, etc) to produce work with accountability to society and to God, that makes a positive difference in the world. I have the privilege of working along side the award winning filmmaker who founded the Shae Foundation on several documentary films that are in progress. However one documentary film is being made in an emergency state, right now, and this is the reason I am writing to you.

A few months ago, we learned about a man named Troy Davis who is on death row in Savannah Georgia. Troy has been on death row for almost 20 years. Despite what our personal or political positions are about the death penalty, I think we can agree that no innocent man should ever be put to death. He came seconds away from lethal injection but they really couldn’t be sure that he was guilty due to new evidence that exists that proves his innocence. However, he can not get a new trial. Troy is a black man convicted of killing a white off duty police officer back in the 80’s. I value your time so I will not go into the details in this email, but after our own research, coupled with public records, we are convinced this man is innocent and has been caught in a system that is ultimately going to kill him. What happened to Troy could happen to any of us or our children. All we need is for one person to say we did something wrong and it’s over, even without a shred of evidence. Troy just received his execution date for September 23, 2008, less than 2 weeks away!!. We are working tirelessly to find a way to help save his life. But even if we can’t, this story must be told, even in its short form film, right now. The film will be the death of reap

Troy Davis

Below is an excerpt from Amnesty International:

Call to Action: Stop the Execution of Troy Davis

Troy Anthony Davis has been on death row in Georgia for more than 16 years for the murder of Police Officer Mark Allen MacPhail at a Burger King in Savannah, Georgia –
despite strong evidence suggesting he is innocent.

There was no physical evidence against Troy Davis.

The weapon used in the crime was never found.

The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony.

Seven of the nine non-police witnesses have recanted or contradicted their testimony.

Many of these witnesses have stated that they were pressured or coerced by police.

One of the two witnesses who has not recanted or contradicted testimony is Sylvester Coles, the principal alternative suspect.

Nine individuals have signed affidavits implicating Sylvester Coles.

Troy Davis has never had a hearing in federal court on the reliability of the witness testimony used against him.
