Greetings Everyone,
I recently had a conversation with a guest on my radio show (the conversation took place off-air) and he was telling me a very interesting story about radio syndication. It seems that he used to have a show on a local Texas radio station and soon after it took off, he joined a syndicate that charged him thousands of dollars to syndicate him all over the United States in major markets both AM and FM. Sound great, right?
Here is the problem. After a year of “syndication” he was only getting phone calls in the region that he was locally serving. He said that he had tons of calls and many loyal listeners and could not understand how it was not taking off nationwide. He found out that he was not being syndicated. How about that?
The short story being that he was burned, never recovered his lost money and wound up shutting the show down. It’s a depresing story, but you have to watch who you are syndicating with. What are you really paying for?
Let’s look at the most basic “professional” avenue I can think of. Blog Talk Radio. I like BTR, I think they really have some magic beans with the live podcasting thing. However, recently they started doing “stations” for those of us who want to syndicate ourselves and form a network.
Here is the breakdown for Blog Talk Stations. For 40 hrs per week, you pay $7,500 per month! And if you want your shows to stream 24/7 that will cost you an additional $2,500 per month. Now I am not sure about you but that is not an affordable option for me. And BTR is a basic example. Other companies like Voice America are similar or worse. How do I know?
I own an internet radio station. I can be on the air 24/7 and I do stream 24/7 and I do it for less than 10% of what they want. It is possible. Do I syndicate? Yes, I actually re-air previous live shows from some friends of mine. I also struck two deals where other folks are going to come on board and I am syndicating their programs for a small fee per month to help with station costs. I make no empty promises, I just replay your show.
My advice is to think of your needs and figure from there and if you decide to go that route, research the companu fully, including current clients. My name is Joel Michalec and I run a grass roots radio station online. Thanks for listening.
